The second of our four free twilight CPD workshops which are aimed at Key Stage 3, 4 and 5 teachers and educators who are interested in how we teach and learn about Medieval Women.

This series of CPD supports the British Library’s Medieval Women school visits programme.

They include free exhibition entry and a guided tour of the British Library’s new exhibition, ‘Medieval Women: In Their Own Words‘ supported by academic historians and teachers from the Teaching Medieval Women group in conjunction with the British Library learning team. Each session will be based around a series of different themes linked to current medieval topics in secondary education. Exhibition visits will take place between 5pm-6pm.

The exhibition highlights the voices and experiences of medieval women, examining the diverse roles and impact of women during this time, searching for what was lost or ‘hidden,’ celebrating their many achievements, and connecting past lives with the issues and experiences of women today.

This first session takes us on a curated tour of select individuals, texts and objects in the exhibition to explore the theme of medieval women and movement. It will highlight ways in which we can investigate and learn about how women moved across the medieval world, whether for marriage or migration, trade, pilgrimage or crusade, or whether they were forced into travel by warfare or as captured slaves.

Speakers include

Dr Natasha Hodgson – Nottingham Trent University

Prof Jonathan Phillips – Royal Holloway University of London

Vicky Brock – North London Collegiate School

After a break for refreshments, the second part of the workshop will run from 6.15pm to 7.30pm held in the Learning Centre. It will be an interactive, participatory session with the opportunity to co-create resources with academics and teachers from examples in the exhibition for classroom use.
