The Animated Stories of 6 Medieval Women From Around the World

To celebrate International Women’s Day 2024, the Teaching Medieval Women team are excited to premiere a short animated film about six medieval women from around the globe aimed at KS3! This film was commissioned by us and created by a talented group of undergraduate Animation students at Nottingham Trent University working under the name, Palette Productions.

The animated short produced by Teaching Medieval Women and Palette Productions.

The film showcases the lives of 6 extraordinary medieval women from across the world: Melisende of Jerusalem, Shajar al-Durr, Rudrama-devi, Empress Dowager Chengtian of the Khitan Liao, Anna Vsevolodovna of Kiev, and Malintzin.

International Women’s Day is celebrated globally every year on 8 March and is an important day not only for celebrating the past achievements of women, but also to push for a better, more inclusive future. In drawing on examples of medieval women from across religions and cultures, this film corresponds well with the 2024 IWD theme of#InspireInclusion.

The film was produced to provide an educational and exciting introduction to the lives of six medieval women, whose stories are not so well known. By highlighting their stories, we hope to inspire further inclusion of such women into current history teaching, providing an alternative to what is frequently male-dominant narratives of the medieval era.

The release of this film on International Women’s Day comes at the start of what looks set to be a very busy and exciting year for the Teaching Medieval Women project with upcoming talks at the Historical Association and School History Project conferences and CPD days in Nottingham and Winchester (see our Events page for more info). We recommend registering to the website to keep up-to-date with events and further publication of content. We also recommend subscribing to our new social media accounts at X (Twitter), YouTube and Instagram to stay further in the loop.
