Teaching Medieval Women in Guernsey

TMW’s Professor Jonathan Phillips recently made a quick trip to the sunny island of Guernsey to give a lecture on ‘Medieval Queenship: Women in Power in the Medieval World’ to students and staff at The Sixth Form Centre, Guernsey. He spoke to an enthusiastic crowd about the Teaching Medieval Women project, Queen Melisende of Jerusalem and Shajar al-Durr, sultan of Egypt.

The audience of over 200 included students from the host institution along with visitors from a quartet of local schools, namely The Ladies College, Elizabeth College, Les Varendes High School and St Sampson’s High School.

Jonathan also gave two classes to the Crusades ‘A’ level students at The Sixth Form Centre.

Thanks goes to the SFC tutor Joseph Hearn for arranging the talk and all the students for such a friendly and engaged welcome. There’s not many places where the staff can go swimming in the sea every lunchtime! (NB: Jonathan did not go swimming himself on the trip!)
